If you are playing free-to-play, steady progress comes from Resource Discipline more than chasing every short-term upgrade.

Diamond Discipline

NEVER spend Diamonds on the Tavern or speed-ups. Only spend on: Event Shops, Wheel Tokens (Faction Week), and VIP Points.

Guild "Leeching"

You must be in an active guild. Every time a "Whale" buys a pack, you get a chest. F2P players survive on the gifts of their spenders. If your guild is quiet, leave.

The Meat Economy

Meat is your #1 bottleneck. Every single day, go to the Resource Store and trade your excess Wood/Stone for Meat. You will regret it later if you don't.
